What Car? Awards 2021

The What Car? Car of the Year Awards is one of the most eagerly-anticipated events in the automotive calendar, valued by carmakers for the impact recognition can have on vehicle sales and brand identity.

With the What Car? Safety Award, Thatcham Research has long celebrated the carmakers who put safety top of the priority list.

As the Euro NCAP safety bar raises, and evermore exacting assessments are introduced, so too has the standard of safety delivered by carmakers. Where once the mere presence of Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) was a bonus, today carmakers are assessed on safety technology that prevents driver disengagement, reversing accidents and ‘Turn Across Path’ collisions at junctions, to name just a few.

Meanwhile, in the realm of ‘passive’ safety, 2020 saw some of the biggest changes in more than a decade, via the introduction of new ‘compatibility’ and side-impact tests.

In 2021, Thatcham Research is once again sponsoring the coveted Technology Award which appraises pioneering technologies that are not only innovative by today’s standards but will also establish new platforms for the future.
