Thatcham Research has launched Developing Learners Through Mentoring, a free programme designed to help workplace mentors better support apprentices, new starters and developing technicians within the collision repair sector. The initiative equips experienced professionals with practical coaching, communication and teaching techniques that can improve learner confidence, engagement and retention.

Delivered through a series of short 45-minute webinar sessions over three weeks, the programme is designed to fit around workplace commitments while providing mentors with skills they can immediately apply in the workshop. Topics include adaptive teaching, effective questioning, constructive feedback, goal setting and supporting different learning needs, including neurodiversity.

With 73% of repairers believing the industry faces a skills gap, the programme forms part of Thatcham Research’s wider commitment to strengthening the automotive talent pipeline and supporting the long-term sustainability of the repair sector. Employers can benefit through improved apprentice performance, stronger workforce development and better protection of their training investment.

Des James, automotive skills development coach at Thatcham Research and creator of the programme, said: “We often assume that an expert technician will naturally know how to teach, coach and mentor others. The reality is that mentoring is a skill in its own right.

“This course gives mentors practical tools to bring out the best in every developing technician, while recognising that people learn in different ways.”

Repairers, bodyshops and workplace mentors interested in future programmes can register their interest with Thatcham Research by contacting hello@thatcham.org.
