Thatcham Research has revealed the BMW X3 as the winner of the 2026 What Car? Safety Award, recognising it as the safest new car on the market. Following rigorous testing by Thatcham Research and What Car? magazine, the X3 stood out for its exemplary Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
Judges praised the X3 for delivering safety technology that works consistently, accurately and collaboratively with drivers, a vital factor in ensuring that drivers keep these systems enabled. The X3 also features robust passive safety protection, including a pop‑up bonnet to help protect pedestrians and cyclists.
Two vehicles were recognised as runners‑up:
- Smart #5 – Noted for intuitive and extensive safety technology offered as standard, including reverse AEB, 360‑degree cameras and an excellent driver monitoring system.
- Škoda Elroq – Praised for its value and strong ADAS performance, including excellent Lane Keep Assist and best‑practice in assisted‑driving responses.
