Becoming an ATA Registered Technician

1. Contact your nearest ATA Approved Assessment Centre

For Panel, Paint, Fitter (MET) and Bodyshop Estimator accreditations you should contact Thatcham on 01635 294825 for details of the next available assessment day.

Your assessment centre will advise on the cost of the assessment, which is valid for 5 years, and includes registration, on-line testing and the individual photo identity card. You will also be advised on the application process and how to proceed. You will need to decide on the level of accreditation you want to achieve and make sure that you are eligible to take assessment at this level.

If you have recently completed a manufacturer assessment programme that has been ATA approved, you may already have passed the required assessments to become an ATA registered technician.

2. Assessment Day

Attend and complete your practical assessments and on-line test. You will be expected to sign the ATA Code of Conduct and have your photograph taken, for the ATA photo identity card.

If you pass all your assessments, you will be advised on the day, with the exception of Estimator Accreditation, where delegates will be notified within 10 working days.

You will receive written notification of your success, your photo identity card and full details on making the most of ATA within two weeks. You will also be registered on the public register of ATA technicians on this website.

Otherwise, the assessment centre will provide written guidance on your training needs. You will be able to complete a partial re-assessment in those areas in which you were not successful, at an additional cost. However, if you are unsuccessful in more than two practical assessments, you will need to take all the assessments again.

3. Make the most of your accreditation

This will be valid for five years from the day of your assessment, after which time you will need to complete a full re-assessment to renew your Accreditation.

ATA registered Technicians have their own area on this web site for updating their details — which appear on the ATA Register of Technicians, ATA news and ordering point-of-sale materials.

All ATA Registered Technicians agree to abide by the ATA Code of Conduct as a condition of accreditation.
