The double five-star rating system is based on detailed analysis and testing carried out at Thatcham, and provides an indication of the quality of design and anticipated effectiveness of anti-theft measures.

However, some cars will be more attractive to car thieves than others, whilst the biggest factor is always opportunity. Any car is at risk while parked, if security measures are not used, or if valuables are left on display inside.

A star rating provides no guarantee that a car will not be stolen or broken into. However, the higher the rating, the less likely this should be.
