New Vehicle Security Ratings

To find out how Thatcham rate the security of the vehicle you are interested in, just click on the vehicle type that you want to know about in the menu on the left.

If you are purchasing a new car, it's also important to consider its safety. Thatcham provide information on the ability of your car's head restraint to protect you from whiplash injuries.

Thatcham have been working to improve vehicle security since 1992, when the news was filled with stories of joyriders and the damage and suffering they were causing. Although we have seen a reduction in vehicle crime, there is no room for complacency when it comes to protecting yourself from the criminals. You can find more information on protecting yourself from vehicle crime here.

Background Information

The New Vehicle Security Ratings scheme, covering cars, vans and trucks is an extension of the New Car Security Ratings (NCSR) scheme launched in 2001. The security ratings are derived from the New Vehicle Security Assessments undertaken by Thatcham for insurance group rating purposes. Although launched by Thatcham, the Association of British Insurers and Lloyd’s, the NCSR scheme was developed jointly with the Automobile Association, the former Department of Transport, Local Government and the Regions and is supported by the Government's Vehicle Crime Reduction Action Team (VCRAT) New Car Security Task Group chaired by the Department for Transport.
